Redmen's Server Rack

Description

In summer 2001 Redmen and Matt built this special server rack during two weeks of work because Redmen wanted his server out of his bedroom. The rack was based on a cupboard (bought for 60.- CHF from a rummage dealer). It was modified so the computers could be placed on three shelves. An air condition was also built into the rack to prevent the computers from overheating. The rack is in Redmen's winter garden now because the noise is less disturbing there.

redmen_rack1.jpgThe rack in its primitive state (it smelled like a whorehouse when it was bought). There's just an experimental build-up of the air condition.
redmen_rack2.jpgThe drawer at the bottom of the cupboard was modded into a removable air box. The front part can be opened to change the dust filter. Under the top cover there are two 220V fans and a 12V Papst fan (Ø 120mm each). You can see the air intake in the front, it is actually a bit too small at full speed.
redmen_rack3.jpgThis aluminum tube is used to cool the air better on hot days by placing it in a water basin. Cooling elements for cooling boxes help a lot.
redmen_rack4.jpgThis nicely soldered PCB ist from an old 486 mainboard and supplies the 12V fans. It consists of five sections which are connected to switches. To avoid a short circuit deep cuts had to be made into the PCB. There's a jumper bar on the other side which connects the fans.
redmen_rack5.jpgThis is the control panel. On top is a modded KVM switch. Below are four switches for 12V fans and two for 220V fans. At the bottom two BNC and a RJ45 connector was built into the panel. The 220V supply is on the rear right (correctly grounded!)
redmen_rack6.jpgThis is the back of the panel. All cables have been wired and the high voltage parts have been covered. The KVM switch has actually just been screwed to the panel.
redmen_rack7.jpgThe final version of the rack. It's got an integrated lamp now and three shelves made of wood. At the moment four servers are in the rack: A PII-266 file server, a P133 router and two 486s running SETI. There's still space for a big tower on the lowest shelf.
