Description

The new VIA Samuel 2 CPU which is working together with two 7200RPM HDDs in my server wasn't as cool as expected so I had to do something, particularly to ensure the HDD's survival...
After lots of consideration I enduced that I needed a mean beast of a fan...I finally chose an 18W 230V Papst fan, which:
1. doesn't stress the small PSU
2. was already declared as trash :)

After some cleaning the fan spinned quite nicely again :)

fan_mod01.jpgOK, let's measure the case...
fan_mod02.jpgHmmm...looks good, no?
fan_mod03.jpgIt was easy to drill the holes, even the cheapass machine bought at Migros and equipped with an old HSS drill was able to perforate the thin and unstable case. A puncher might have worked too but I didn't want to sacrifice my 1337 Leitz 5012 (Swissc** loot) :)
fan_mod04.jpgThe actual problem was cutting out the round hole with the hacksaw...
The sheet metal was damn unstable and hard to clamp due to its from... it needed some serious AHRNOLDING!!
fan_mod05.jpgYes, after two twisted saw blades the cut-out was complete and the case was pwned!
fan_mod06.jpgTo separate the fan from the case in terms of noise the packaging of the VIA mainboard was perfect.
fan_mod07.jpgHere the whole thing is fitted.
fan_mod08.jpgIt's done!

Except for the scratches (on the case in the first place) which were made during hacksawing the whole thing was done without notable things happening. No casualties except the two saw blades have been reported yet...

The result is good:
40°C and 43°C, it was 10-15°C higher before the mod...
